A WordPress backup is a copy of your entire website — files and database — saved somewhere safe. If something goes wrong (hack, bad update, accidental deletion), a backup lets you restore your site to a working state. No backup equals potential disaster.

What Gets Backed Up

  • Database — all your posts, pages, settings, comments, and user data
  • Files — your WordPress core files, themes, plugins, and uploaded media

You need both to fully restore a site.

Types of Backups

  • Full backups — everything, every time. Safest but takes the most storage.
  • Incremental backups — only backs up what changed since the last backup. Faster and lighter.

Where to Store Backups

Never store backups only on the same server as your site. Use offsite storage:

  • Google Drive or Dropbox
  • Amazon S3
  • A separate hosting account

Popular Backup Plugins

  • UpdraftPlus — most popular, free version is solid
  • All-in-One WP Migration — great for moving sites too
  • Jetpack Backup — real-time backups (premium)

Set up automated backups from day one. You’ll never regret having one, but you’ll absolutely regret not having one.
