cPanel is a web-based control panel that hosting companies use to let you manage your hosting account through a graphical interface. Instead of using command-line tools to manage your server, cPanel gives you a dashboard with icons and menus for everything — files, databases, email, domains, and more.

What You Can Do in cPanel

  • File Manager — browse, upload, edit, and delete files on your server
  • Databases — create and manage MySQL databases (needed for WordPress)
  • Email accounts — set up professional email addresses at your domain
  • Domain management — add domains, subdomains, and redirects
  • WordPress installer — one-click WordPress installation via tools like Softaculous
  • SSL certificates — install and manage SSL for your domains
  • Backups — create and restore site backups
  • Error logs — diagnose server and PHP errors

cPanel Alternatives

Not all hosts use cPanel. Alternatives include:

  • Plesk — popular on Windows servers and some Linux hosts
  • DirectAdmin — lighter and faster than cPanel
  • Custom dashboards — some hosts (like Kinsta or WP Engine) build their own

Who Uses cPanel?

Most shared hosting providers (Hostinger, SiteGround, Bluehost, A2 Hosting) use cPanel. It’s the industry standard for beginner-friendly hosting management.
