Upselling is a sales technique where you encourage a customer to purchase a higher-priced or upgraded version of what they’re already buying. Done right, it helps customers get better results while increasing your revenue. The key is relevance: the upsell must genuinely add value.

Upselling vs Cross-Selling

  • Upsell: Upgrading to a better or bigger version. A customer buys a basic hosting plan, and you offer the premium plan with more storage.
  • Cross-sell: Adding a complementary product. A customer buys a domain, and you offer to add email hosting.

Why Upselling Works

It’s much easier to sell to someone who is already buying than to find a brand new customer. At the moment of purchase, trust is already established and the person is in a buying mindset. A well-timed upsell can boost your average order value significantly.

Upselling in WordPress

  • WooCommerce supports product upsells natively via the Linked Products tab
  • CartFlows and FunnelKit add post-purchase upsell pages to your checkout flow
  • Membership plugins like MemberPress can offer upgrade paths between plan tiers
